This is Ginger's dough, Ginger's oven and Ginger's rolling pin. Lovely is on decorating duty, which is how every cookie ended up with a message on it.

From Ginger's pantry

You'll need

  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • Icing and decorations

Let's make it

  1. Cream the softened butter and sugar together until fluffy.

  2. Mix in the egg and the vanilla.

  3. Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt until a dough comes together.

  4. If the dough feels soft, chill it briefly so it rolls nicely.

  5. Roll it out and cut heart shapes.

  6. Bake at 350°F / 175°C for roughly 8–10 minutes, until the edges just begin to turn golden. A grown-up handles the oven.

  7. Cool the cookies completely, then decorate them with X's, O's and XO's.
