What you'll need
- ToothpicksAbout 10–15
- Child-safe craft glue
- Stable cardboard or craft base
- Green paint or markersOptional
- Small decorationsSequins, dots of paint or tiny stickers
- Star topperOptional — a small card star
Build it
- 1A grown-up hands out the toothpicks and stays close for the whole build — the points are sharp.
- 2Colour a small handful of toothpicks green. Do not aim for neat.
- 3Glue one toothpick flat down the middle of your base. That is the trunk.
- 4Glue toothpicks out from the trunk in rows: three near the bottom, two in the middle, one at the top.
- 5Leave gaps and let a branch or two droop. That is the whole joke.
- 6Add exactly one decoration. It will look far too big. Perfect.
- 7Let the glue dry completely before you move it, because otherwise it will fall over.
Grown-up help, please
Toothpicks have sharp points, so a grown-up should be at the table for this one from start to finish. Never cut or snap toothpicks with a knife — if a shorter piece is needed, a grown-up can trim it with scissors. Keep spare toothpicks in their box between steps.
