A Christmas tree built entirely out of cubes. Colour the cubes and you get ornaments, garland and a topper — no pine needles anywhere.

What you'll need

  • Sugar cubes OR ice cubes
  • Plate or trayFreezer-safe for the ice version
  • Simple icingFor the sugar version
  • Water + freezer timeFor the ice version
  • Food colouringOptional — coloured ice cubes are made by freezing water + food colouring
  • Small clean paintbrushFor colouring sugar cubes sparingly

Build it

Jack: “No sugar cubes? Use ice cubes. No ice cubes? Use sugar cubes. They're both cubes. Close enough.”

  1. 1Lay a wide bottom row of cubes on your plate or tray.
  2. 2Add progressively smaller rows on top, each one centred over the last.
  3. 3Finish with a single cube at the very top.
  4. 4Decorate by colouring the cubes — a small clean paintbrush and a dot of food colouring is plenty.
  5. 5Coloured cubes can be ornaments, a garland running around the rows, or the topper.

Grown-up help, please

Grown-up help recommended, especially for the ice version — freezers, trays and melty puddles are a grown-up job. Never use ordinary craft glue on sugar cubes: simple icing is the only mortar here. If you add any non-edible craft bits, the finished build is for looking at, not for eating. Ice builds melt, so build on a tray and pop them back in the freezer between steps.
