Cube by cube, dome by dome

Build a little igloo out of sugar cubes. Or ice cubes. Jack isn't fussy.

Rows of cubes, each one leaning a little further inward, and suddenly you have a dome. Leave a doorway, or you will be building a very small prison.

What you'll need

  • Sugar cubes OR ice cubesWhatever your kitchen has
  • Plate or shallow trayFreezer-safe for the ice version
  • Simple icingMortar for the sugar version
  • A little cold water + freezer timeMortar for the ice version

Build it

Jack: “No sugar cubes? Use ice cubes. No ice cubes? Use sugar cubes. They're both cubes. Close enough.”

  1. 1Lay a circle of cubes on your plate or tray, leaving a gap for the doorway.
  2. 2Start a second row, each cube slightly overlapping the one below and moving a little inward.
  3. 3Keep going with smaller rows, leaning further inward each time.
  4. 4Close the top with the last cube or two.
  5. 5Optional: add a short entrance tunnel out from the doorway.
  6. 6Let the sugar version set, or pop the ice version back in the freezer to refreeze.

Grown-up help, please

Grown-up help recommended, especially for the ice version — freezers, trays and melty puddles are a grown-up job. Never use ordinary craft glue on sugar cubes: simple icing is the only mortar here. If you add any non-edible craft bits, the finished build is for looking at, not for eating. Ice builds melt, so build on a tray and pop them back in the freezer between steps.
